Pier 55 Park Takes Shape in New York’s Hudson River

Pier 55 is a 2.4 acre park located over the Hudson River, on the lower west side of Manhattan. This one-of-a-kind park is supported by 132 precast concrete forms that create a base for green space, walking paths, rolling hills and a waterfront amphitheater – all over water! These massive, funnel-shaped forms, or pots are anchored to a number of individual concrete piers and create a striking appearance from the shore.

All 132 precast concrete pots were produced by the Fort Miller Group, in Upstate New York. Each pot consists of 5 petals surrounded by a column head – not one petal is the same. The pots weigh up to 90 tons and can reach up to 30 feet in height. H2H performed quality control high definition laser scanning of all pots and the finished product prior to final shipping and final assembly.

The pots were shipped down the Hudson River from the Fort Miller Group in Easton, NY to New York City, and then lowered into place by a 350-ton crane. Designed in collaboration between Heatherwick Studio and MNLA, the inspiration for this construction is a leaf floating on water. Slated for completion in the Spring of 2021, we can’t wait to visit and admire the completed project!

H2H performed high definition laser scanning using their Trimble SX10 Scanning Total Station on each concrete form to ensure that the final product exactly matched the design model. In this image of a concrete form, the scanning analysis shows deviations from the model. Blue represents deviations lower than the model, while red represents deviations above the model.

Construction is underway, and scheduled to be completed in the Spring of 2021.

“The H2H 3D marine mapping system is allowing us to make more informed decisions about areas that need to be manually inspected. We are in the process of adjusting our standard procedures and workflows to take better advantage of the technology in the future. The system definitely performed as promised,”
